iOS App: BTHome Monitor

I built an app! BTHome Monitor brings visibility of BTHome sensors to iOS, allowing you to troubleshoot custom sensors, or extend their range by proxying the sensor data via webhooks.

BTHome is an open standard for broadcasting sensor data over Bluetooth LE; enabling monitoring of low energy devices.

I built this project to solve the problem of needing opportunistic updates to mobile BTHome sensors, without the use of power hungry WiFi based solutions. Yes – incredibly niche, but it’s been great to hear feedback from a couple of early users around the world already.

As at version 1.0.2 BTHome Monitor currently supports:

  • V1 and V2 sensor support
  • Background monitoring
  • Transmit sensor data to a webhook in the background
  • Track min/max observed sensor values

I used the fantastic vibe coding iOS app Bitrig to get a head start with the development. While it wasn’t able to emulate the Bluetooth aspects inside Bitrig, it created an excellent first cut at the code and it was a fairly easy lift into Xcode to continue with the development from there.

Thanks for trying it out, please get in touch with any feedback!
